Bee control experts

Although bees are an essential part of the natural cycle, most people don’t want to have a hive close to their house. If you’ve noticed flying insects buzzing around your yard or even inside your house, it’s time to call us.

Our pest-control specialists know how to remove bees and wasps the right way—we will identify the species, find the location of the nest and return at the best time of day to remove them. We are available to serve you at many locations throughout Quebec, including Montreal and the Island, the North and South Shores, Gatineau, Laval, Repentigny, St-Jérome and Trois-Rivières.

Which kind of insect are you dealing with?

There are approximately 20,000 different species in the world. The best-known bees in Quebec are the bumblebee and the Western honey bee, which produces the honey and beeswax we use. Honey bees live in colonies made up of a queen bee, female workers and fertile males called drones. Only the queen bee can reproduce. Worker bees build, clean and protect the hive, gather pollen and nectar to feed the colony and take care of the offspring. The drones’ only job is to mate with the queen; her only role is to lay eggs.

Bees can see all colours except red. Their vision and sense of smell help them find the kinds of flowers that provide the pollen they need to nourish the colony. Bees generally avoid humans, preferring to go about their work without any interaction. However, if they feel threatened, or if the hive is threatened, they will sting.

Is it a bee, a wasp or a hornet?

The scientific way to tell if you’re looking at a bee is to examine its body. If it’s covered in fuzzy branched hairs, it’s not a wasp or hornet. The latter have shiny, smooth bodies. Bumblebees also have plumper bodies and a more rounded abdomen than the pointier-bodied honey bee.

Another reliable indicator is to observe what the insect does after taking pollen from a flower. If it brushes the collected pollen onto its hind legs, it’s a bee.

The nest offers further clues. Honey bees build a wax comb for their larvae and swarm as a large group, along with the queen, to start a new colony when necessary. Bumblebee colonies are smaller than those of honey bees, typically numbering about 50 specimens, and their nests are built in the ground. Some species of wasp and hornet also build their nests in the ground, while others construct small or large papery nests along walls or hanging from tree branches.

Highlight en encadré: Bees, which are closely linked to wasps, hornets and flying ants, are appreciated by orchard owners, farmers and all nature lovers for their crucial role in pollination. Thanks to the remarkable symbiosis between bees and plants, many of the varieties of nuts, fruits, vegetables and flowers we enjoy can flourish when bees do their job.

How to get rid of them

Bees are unarguably beneficial to the environment, but their stings can hurt, or worse, cause life-threatening allergic reactions in some people. Simply knowing that a hive is nearby is enough to cause anxiety for many Quebecers, hence the need to banish their presence from the home or cottage.

As beneficial pollinators, honeybees and bumblebees are neither aggressive nor truly dangerous (for non-allergic people), so measures must be taken to remove them without killing them. Because bee colonies can be extremely large, and moving hives quite complicated, we recommend bringing in a pest-control professional or an experienced bee-keeper to remove a honeycomb hive safely.

Before undertaking any kind of action to get rid of flying insects, it’s important to know if you’re dealing with bees, wasps or hornets.
