The tail is short and blunt, and the wings, pointed and triangular. These birds can congregate in groups of up to 10,000 at nighttime. There\u2019s no question about it: their huge numbers are the real challenge.<\/p>\n<p>Although birds of prey\u2014such as hawks and turkey vultures\u2014are their main predators, natural predation isn\u2019t enough to control the starling population. Starlings breed so quickly that they can easily replace their losses. In North America, it\u2019s estimated that there are some 200 million starlings.<\/p>\n<p>These birds are opportunistic, and so when they land on a farmer\u2019s fields they quickly plunder crops, orchards and even animal feed. In fact, they will love your air-, dryer- and kitchen-fan vents. Females, recognizable by their more speckled plumage, can lay up to seven eggs per brood.<\/p>\n<p>After two weeks, the eggs are ready to hatch. The babies will stay in the nest for about 21 days. During this time, parents travel up to 25 km a day to find food for their hatchlings.<\/p>\n<p>A starling nest just looks like a clump of organic waste, infested with parasites.
